Why is my fresh water pump running but no water is coming out?
If your fresh water pump is running but no water is coming out, here’s what’s likely going on—especially in the context of just having winterized your Tiffin motorhome:
Likely Causes and Fixes
1. Water Pump is Air-Locked
- This is common after winterizing or draining tanks.
- Fix: Open multiple faucets (hot and cold) and let the pump run for a minute or two to purge the air. It may sputter before water flows.
2. Water Heater is Still Bypassed
- If you didn’t return the water heater bypass valves to “normal” after winterizing, it can interrupt flow to fixtures.
- Fix: Set the valves back to “normal” configuration to allow water through the heater.
3. Fresh Water Tank is Empty or Low
- The pump won’t prime if there’s not enough water in the tank.
- Fix: Check tank level and refill if needed.
4. Pump Inlet Strainer is Clogged
- Debris in the tank can clog the mesh filter on the pump’s inlet.
- Fix: Inspect and clean the strainer. It’s usually clear plastic and mounted just before the pump.
5. Pump is Sucking Air from a Loose Fitting
- Any air leak at fittings (especially around the winterization siphon hose or valves) can prevent priming.
- Fix: Tighten hose clamps, and ensure the siphon valve is turned off if not winterizing.
6. Winterization Valve Still in Siphon Mode
- If the winterization valve is still set to draw from the antifreeze tube, it won’t draw from the fresh tank.
- Fix: Return the valve to “normal” position so it pulls from the freshwater tank.
