2026 Byway: Chapter 14

Windows

Vent windows (Figure 14-1) and vertical slide windows are custom built for the motorhome and allow access to fresh outside air.

There might also be a reflective coating on the windows to reflect back a portion of the sunlight to reduce the heating of the motorhome interior and to reduce the effects of the sun’s “bleaching” of interior fabrics (curtains, upholstery).

Sun shades on both the driver’s and passenger’s sides can be deployed and moved at any time.

Windows throughout the coach are designated as “EXIT” windows in the event of an emergency.

To help make the windows slide more easily, Tiffin Motorhomes recommends using Plexus Plastic Cleaner, which can be purchased through the Tiffin Motorhomes Service Department.

Awnings

The power patio and door awnings (Figure 14-2) are standard on the Byway. These awnings are extremely durable and can be operated during light rain and wind conditions. However, when periods of heavy rain, or wind is expected, or you leave the awning unattended, the awning should be closed. Note that damage caused by wind and rain is not covered by warranty. To operate the awnings, follow the instructions listed below.

To open the awning:

1. Locate the Door Awning Control Switch (Figure 14-3) at front door entrance, next to the passenger seat. Locate the Patio Awning Control (Figure 14-4) in the overhead cabinet area in the driver’s cockpit.

2. Press the EXT/EXTEND button until the awning is fully extended. Full extension is considered complete when the fabric is completely unrolled, the valance seam is visible, and a section of the roll tube is exposed.

3. Verify that the awning fabric is above the roll tube; see Figure 14-5 Choose the side of the awning for allow for optimum shade or convenient water run-off. The pitch must be set by adjusting the articulating arm to tip one side the awning to allow water run-off. See the awning instructions found in the Owner’s Information Package.

To close the awning:

1. Locate the Patio Awning Control Switch in the overhead cabinet area, or Door Awning Control Switch at the door entrance next to the passenger seat.

2. Press the RET/RETRACT button until the awning is fully closed.

In case of awning power failure or to manually close the awning:

In the event of motor failure or power loss, the awning can be extended and retracted manually. Perform the following procedure

1. Remove the rubber grommet from the motor drive assembly, exposing the manual override nut on the motor as shown in see Figure 14-6. NOTE: the motor drive assembly is located on the right side of the awning when viewed from the outside of the motorhome.

2. Using a 7/16” socket and a cordless drill, turn the manual override nut clockwise to extend or counterclockwise to retract the awning, see Figure 14-6.

3. When the awning is fully extended or retracted, remove the 7/16”socket.

4. Reinstall the rubber grommet in the motor drive assembly

NOTE: Use caution when extending or retracting the awning manually. Use a step stool or ladder to completely extend or retract the awning. Have the awning serviced by a Girard Service Center or a qualified service technician before attempting to open the awning after this procedure has been performed.

Vents

The kitchen and bathroom are both equipped with a 12 VDC exhaust vent (Figure 14-8). The fans are controlled by the fan tab on the Spyder TM Controls System (Figure 14-7). A three-speed switch on each vent fan controls the fan speed.

IMPORTANT: The vent fan must be left in the ON mode only when the motorhome is parked and in use. The fan will not operate until the vent is open.

Doors

The primary entrance door to the motorhome has a key lock and a dead bolt for additional security. When the door is fully opened, the door hinge automatically holds the door in an OPEN position.

There is also a screen that allows increased air circulation when the entrance door is open.
